It's been a while since I've posted. I've been busy with things other than cookie decorating. I made these for my daughter's Christmas party. Polar bears, snowflakes, and Christmas trees. I mixed the green with 3 parts violet, 2 parts lemon yellow, and 1 part leaf green (AmeriColor). I added a little the green icing to the red, yellow and blue to make color palette match. One more daughter with a birthday ... an early July summer birthday ... but she wanted cookies to share with her class too, of course. I'm glad her teacher didn't mind accommodating a last minute request! Giraffes are her favorite animal. <br />
My second youngest daughter turned six recently and she loves owls. She has a white owl stuffed animal that she sleeps with every nights and she wanted her cookies to look just like this. That made it a bit easier for me since these owls didn't require a lot of color mixing. These cookies were fairly simple to make.<br />
<br />
I own an owl cookie cutter but it's <a href="http://www.royalicingqueen.com/2015/10/halloween-cookies-spiders-creepy-eyes.html">for Halloween</a> and it's wearing a witch's hat. Rather than modify 24 cookies by cutting off the hats before I baked them (these were for her Kindergarten class), I went to Pinterest for inspiration and saw that a tulip cookie cutter made a perfect owl shape. Fortunately, I already owned one of these. All I needed to do was outline and flood the tulip-shaped cookie in white. I let them dry overnight. And then I added the details. I only needed to mix yellow and black icing for the eyes, beak, and feet. There wasn't that much to these. <br />
For these cookies, I used the pumpkin cookie cutter in the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Wilton-2304-1050-101-Piece-Cookie-Cutter/dp/B001D1FJ2E/">Wilton 101 cookie cutter set</a> although just about any medium to large sized pumpkin cookie cutter would work for these.<br />
<br />
I wanted these jack-o-lanterns to have a layered look with the black jack-o-lantern faces receding into the background, so I used the technique where the black icing is spread flat onto the cookie first and all other icings are layered on top. I have included a few pictures to show how this works. <br />
<br />
To spread the black icing onto the cookie, I used an <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Wilton-409-7716-Angled-Spatula-13-Inch/dp/B00F0A6FYU/">angled cake icing spatula</a> to place of small glob (approximately 1/2 tsp.) of icing onto the cookie. Then I carefully and evenly spread it with the spatula, making sure to not get it too close to the edges of the cookie. The black icing was stiff but not quite outline consistency - closer to 20-second consistency. I needed it to spread easily but not run off the sides of the cookies. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9AC7NyxzYciomSMcNnSU5vc3VX5dP4n2m1kGRgEV1PS6cz7uir-t9kPUv5RrdTTdylGgqhcvm2_kvqbeEuEOMFVKCSUW9Kvzr1MJYDC_7-GGGxFTpGoYJnHGr8___gzYHbRRjpp_ZmbY/s1600/Pumpkin1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9AC7NyxzYciomSMcNnSU5vc3VX5dP4n2m1kGRgEV1PS6cz7uir-t9kPUv5RrdTTdylGgqhcvm2_kvqbeEuEOMFVKCSUW9Kvzr1MJYDC_7-GGGxFTpGoYJnHGr8___gzYHbRRjpp_ZmbY/s320/Pumpkin1.jpg" title="Jack-O-Lantern Cookie Tutorial - The Royal Icing Queen" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Once the black icing was dry, I outlined jack-o-lantern faces onto the cookies and the outside edges of the cookies. I left a small indent at the top so that I could add the pumpkins' brown stems and leaves later.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxXRERFYcyYlHwZeavCATCZCIxo0_vnb4-KFKRe4fSEJHmtlwWf-bUYg7MiDZhuS0ovshEdSg_AfErsQrAo1x7oTcqjt6jBBOFF0Px00islM94w7U1-aPIh3maPzJAhnXmczbfoWFjVqo/s1600/Pumpkin2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxXRERFYcyYlHwZeavCATCZCIxo0_vnb4-KFKRe4fSEJHmtlwWf-bUYg7MiDZhuS0ovshEdSg_AfErsQrAo1x7oTcqjt6jBBOFF0Px00islM94w7U1-aPIh3maPzJAhnXmczbfoWFjVqo/s320/Pumpkin2.jpg" title="Jack-O-Lantern Cookie Tutorial - The Royal Icing Queen" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
As soon as the outlines were dry, I carefully filled in the pumpkins with a Wilton #2 tip and orange 20-second consistency icing. I was careful not to overfill with the icing, otherwise it might run over my outlined edges and into the jack-o-lantern's faces. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpi4-Gjpnn18Ppr-UygIKkpC-kCy2YRlg7RUVpi4XHopuWgXY4axzFfrbWOvI3Hg18jAHLlEibO_irH7NOW2MCoBdscV-Y8Fy7JzXBKFu7QlJ2OVUW0PeCmY0FUKpUA-0d7jSjgHb8yEk/s1600/Pumpkin3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpi4-Gjpnn18Ppr-UygIKkpC-kCy2YRlg7RUVpi4XHopuWgXY4axzFfrbWOvI3Hg18jAHLlEibO_irH7NOW2MCoBdscV-Y8Fy7JzXBKFu7QlJ2OVUW0PeCmY0FUKpUA-0d7jSjgHb8yEk/s320/Pumpkin3.jpg" title="Jack-O-Lantern Cookie Tutorial - The Royal Icing Queen" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I left these overnight to dry. Then I added the additional details - the brown stem, leaves, and top outlines as shown in the finished picture at the top.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-781492591470033255.post-49099840919178096542015-10-10T14:16:00.000-07:002015-10-10T14:17:04.970-07:00Halloween Cookies - Spiders, Creepy Eyes, Jack-O-Lanterns, and OwlsThis is the complete set. <br />
Next, I outlined a circle in the center of the cookies. I used my projector to trace the circle because I am terrible at freehand drawing circles. I used a Wilton icing tip #2 to add the spider's legs. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJFpDkFgkQ6ACn82NU1yo2qveuBm2ly0Ecovvzwj2nmzfU5tn-eeml6UjuYT5xqSpVL8rvL0d_3JPVcH02ursEcowZxodX7cOYXZzDIOlZ1b-bbMfxvygJGxPSA5cEfQxmQUcpo1anbGk/s1600/Spider1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJFpDkFgkQ6ACn82NU1yo2qveuBm2ly0Ecovvzwj2nmzfU5tn-eeml6UjuYT5xqSpVL8rvL0d_3JPVcH02ursEcowZxodX7cOYXZzDIOlZ1b-bbMfxvygJGxPSA5cEfQxmQUcpo1anbGk/s320/Spider1.jpg" title="Spider Cookie Tutorial - The Royal Icing Queen" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I let these to dry for about 2-3 hours and then flooded the center of the circle. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIthTnmc5I6JaxRQ5COHEuQk4OyMAA83NbWXQTDME1Aq98Sjtd7P_EHG_C2b2IpW11arnVtsEFAC3V3ZfOqTcwUKtRi-0OuWWRFeF7MeDuWr-ZVLXZup5y0m5N0zN0iVASaJsIFSkaxhU/s1600/Spider2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIthTnmc5I6JaxRQ5COHEuQk4OyMAA83NbWXQTDME1Aq98Sjtd7P_EHG_C2b2IpW11arnVtsEFAC3V3ZfOqTcwUKtRi-0OuWWRFeF7MeDuWr-ZVLXZup5y0m5N0zN0iVASaJsIFSkaxhU/s320/Spider2.jpg" title="Spider Cookie Tutorial - The Royal Icing Queen" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
While this icing was still wet I added some Jimmie sprinkles to the top of the circle, and then I gently tapped off the excess. <br />

<br />
I let these dry slightly, and then I added some leftover icing to the back of two <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Wilton-Candy-Eyeballs-0-88-Count/dp/B005BPU1P8/">Wilton Candy Eyeballs</a>. I carefully placed the eyeballs on the front of the spiders for the last, finishing touch. This step can wait until the spiders are completely dry, but if you are careful you can add them while the icing is still drying.<br />

It's been a while since I've posted here. I've taken a break from making and decorating cookies. These are for my oldest daughter's American Symbols and Landmarks assembly at her elementary school. She's in second grade and giving a presentation to class parents on the bald eagle. Her teacher asked for there to be a cookie table for the kids and parents to enjoy after the presentations were finished and I knew of this <a href="http://www.cheapcookiecutters.com/products/bald-eagle-head-cookie-cutter-2">bald eagle cookie cutter</a> so I couldn't resist getting into the spirit of things.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-781492591470033255.post-22862116601731409252014-12-16T10:16:00.003-08:002014-12-16T10:22:19.327-08:00Snowflake Cookies<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I used Americolor food gels for these: Sky Blue, Sky Blue mixed with Royal Blue, and Sky Blue mixed with Teal. </div>
This time of the year tends to get very busy so I didn't make anything too complicated for Christmas cookies this year. I made the same snowman last year. I've made so many snowflakes that I wanted to do something a little different this year. This snowflake is something I saw on <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/209065607677849369/">Pinterest</a> and I thought it was incredibly cute. The bonus was it used the same colors and consistency frosting as the snowmen so I didn't need to mix any additional colors. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjy5OeV_fcLZP3HxOMX6KHtFElff0SRTCYBL25uNmKaaOBt_knWJpo_aC8zxIVVaAala_trRcC5DFHERum7lSX4FvbDngFZQtumdJD1MKhTCYAFDybTVP35lTZUGK2US7IgZjG7ngbl33s/s1600/Wedding+Cake+Cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjy5OeV_fcLZP3HxOMX6KHtFElff0SRTCYBL25uNmKaaOBt_knWJpo_aC8zxIVVaAala_trRcC5DFHERum7lSX4FvbDngFZQtumdJD1MKhTCYAFDybTVP35lTZUGK2US7IgZjG7ngbl33s/s640/Wedding+Cake+Cookies.jpg" title="Wedding Cake Cookies - The Royal Icing Queen" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I made these cookies to give out as party favors for my little sister's wedding. They are made entirely with white royal icing and a variety of white accents. I used the cake cookie cutter from the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Wilton-2308-0909-Party-Cookie-Cutter/dp/B004JRHVDE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1415730388&sr=8-1&keywords=cake+cookie+cutter">Wilton Party Cookie Cutter Set</a> to make the cookie shake. After the cookies had cooled completely, I flooded the base of each cookie with white royal icing and let them dry overnight.<br />
<br />
My next step was to airbrush the cookies with a mixture of <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Wilton-Pearl-Dust-White-0-05-Ounce/dp/B000PWRZ8S/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1415730529&sr=8-2&keywords=wilton+pearl+dust">white pearl dust</a> and vodka to give the them a subtle sheen. I used vodka rather than water in my airbrush mixture because the alcohol evaporates faster than water and it's likely that it will mottle the surface of the royal icing like water sometimes can. I made sure to go over lightly with the airbrush. I didn't get the shiny look I wanted with just one pass so I waited for the pearl dust to dry slighting and then went over the cookies with the airbrush again. I needed to do this 3-4 times to get the sheen that I wanted. Once I completed this step, I let the cookies dry for another 20 minutes.<br />
<br />
Now came the best part. Adding the details. I used a variety of different sprinkles and accents for this: <br />
<ul>
<li><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Wilton-Sugar-Pearls-White-Oz/dp/B002N7ST6U/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1415730498&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=wilton+pearl+springles">Wilton Sugar Pearls</a></li>
<li><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Wilton-White-Sparkling-Sugar-Net/dp/B0001XXB3E/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1415730858&sr=8-8&keywords=wilton+sprinkles">Wilton White Sparkling Sugar </a></li>
<li><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Wilton-710-773-White-Nonpareils/dp/B001ENF2NM/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1415730964&sr=8-3&keywords=wilton+nonpareils">Wilton White Nonpareils</a></li>
<li><a href="http://www.cookiecuttershop.com/baking/white-edible-glitter.shtml">White Edible Glitter</a></li>
</ul>
<br />
And I used outline consistency royal icing as well. The steps for decorating these was adding ("sanding") the sprinkles first, then adding the sugar pearls, and then piping on any last details with the royal icing. If I had applied the details first (like the lines and twirly vines), the sprinkles might have adhered to them. I would have needed to wait for the details to dry before adding the sprinkles. Adding the sprinkles first saved me a little time.<br />
<br />
I applied the sugar pearls by placing a dab of royal icing onto the cookie and then carefully positioning the pearl with a pair of tweezers. I used a PME 1.5 tip to add the outline details (lines and twirly vines) and I used a leaf tip (Wilton 65s) to add the leaves around the sugar pearls.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-781492591470033255.post-45470923522167119872014-11-08T13:09:00.004-08:002014-11-11T11:03:56.405-08:00Pastel Rainbow Cookies<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyBItvwEyrVaSi5UukwsO-EGSOiKhkbiIvys1hZ9qVJC3Bx5e4M_iwSujNnTSN43ecPMTWzaDvXBbz73Vx1V5ReuUuvP_NFP0Ij_9P0By64cUgeT4lDOw1Ao-mSfmEwQo9bJwoHKhcObo/s1600/Rainbow+Cookies+-+Pastel.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img alt="" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyBItvwEyrVaSi5UukwsO-EGSOiKhkbiIvys1hZ9qVJC3Bx5e4M_iwSujNnTSN43ecPMTWzaDvXBbz73Vx1V5ReuUuvP_NFP0Ij_9P0By64cUgeT4lDOw1Ao-mSfmEwQo9bJwoHKhcObo/s640/Rainbow+Cookies+-+Pastel.jpg" title="Rainbow Cookies - The Royal Icing Queen" /></a>
My oldest daughter asked for rainbow cookies to share with her class for her birthday last year and she asked for rainbow cookies again this year. I used the rainbow cookie cutter from the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Wilton-Piece-Patricks-Cookie-Cutter/dp/B00683I366/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1415480313&sr=8-1&keywords=rainbow+cookie+cutter">Wilton 3 Piece St. Patrick's Day Cookie Cutter Set</a>. I outlined the clouds in white and then filled them with white, flood consistency royal icing. I let these dry for a couple of hours and then piped on the rainbow with a Wilton #13 star tip. I made sure the royal icing was a stiff consistency so that the stars would keep their shape. This was actually a very easy project. Mixing the different colors and piping the stars took some time, but it wasn't that bad.<br />
<br />
To obtain the pastel colors I used the following Americolor food gels:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Pink: Dusty pink with a very small amount of royal blue (I used a tiny drop added with a toothpick)</li>
<li>Orange: Orange with a very small amount of dusty pink</li>
<li>Yellow: 1/3 Lemon yellow and 2/3 Egg Yellow</li>
<li>Green: Avocado with a small amount of Leaf Green</li>
<li>Blue: Sky Blue</li>
<li>Purple: Dusty Pink, Sky Blue, and Royal Purple</li>

I used Sweet Sugar Belle's trick that she describes here <a href="http://www.sweetsugarbelle.com/2013/05/making-icing-colors-match/">here</a> to make the icing colors match.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-781492591470033255.post-21422398738381970452014-10-09T13:01:00.001-07:002014-10-17T18:10:25.854-07:00Zombie Cookies<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNNfbIhOEU5xB3qDaFmcO5pZ2-_cfRsGMv3nb-qesDALR8F7SshjGGPibzFG5QTskCVcHTGRvJMB52HZbmLqjapCIH_ACkkhyYq7WjXxPn79bGJxELR0Mg2gBrKwPr8Aie5GdhoTrCsd0/s1600/Zombie+Cookies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNNfbIhOEU5xB3qDaFmcO5pZ2-_cfRsGMv3nb-qesDALR8F7SshjGGPibzFG5QTskCVcHTGRvJMB52HZbmLqjapCIH_ACkkhyYq7WjXxPn79bGJxELR0Mg2gBrKwPr8Aie5GdhoTrCsd0/s640/Zombie+Cookies.jpg" title="Zombie Cookies - The Royal Icing Queen" /></a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-781492591470033255.post-54609453562041064582014-09-14T12:02:00.002-07:002014-09-14T12:02:26.694-07:00Hello Kitty Cookies<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I made these as part of this month's <a href="https://www.blogger.com/cookieconnection.juliausher.com/blog/practice-bakes-perfect-challenge-3-color">Practice Bakes Perfect Challenge</a> over at The Cookie Connection. The colors were drawn from the palette there. The camel cookie cutter is from <a href="http://www.cheapcookiecutters.com/products/camel-cookie-cutter">www.cheapcookiecutters.com</a>. I used my <a href="http://www.royalicingqueen.com/2014/05/volleyball-cookies-including-tutorial.html">oven trick</a> to quick-set the top of the brown/rust icing since I know from experience that the camel's legs might have cratered or had a sunken look if left to air dry. I added added the harness and rug details a little while later.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-781492591470033255.post-82203364719722964682014-07-17T11:56:00.000-07:002014-07-17T11:56:17.311-07:00Movie Night CookiesFor my niece's birthday<br />
