Giraffe Cookies

One more daughter with a birthday ... an early July summer birthday ... but she wanted cookies to share with her class too, of course. I'm glad her teacher didn't mind accommodating a last minute request! Giraffes are her favorite animal. I've made giraffe cookies before but used different cookies cutter.

Snowy Owl Cookies

My second youngest daughter turned six recently and she loves owls. She has a white owl stuffed animal that she sleeps with every nights and she wanted her cookies to look just like this. That made it a bit easier for me since these owls didn't require a lot of color mixing. These cookies were fairly simple to make.

I own an owl cookie cutter but it's for Halloween and it's wearing a witch's hat. Rather than modify 24 cookies by cutting off the hats before I baked them (these were for her Kindergarten class), I went to Pinterest for inspiration and saw that a tulip cookie cutter made a perfect owl shape. Fortunately, I already owned one of these. All I needed to do was outline and flood the tulip-shaped cookie in white. I let them dry overnight. And then I added the details. I only needed to mix yellow and black icing for the eyes, beak, and feet. There wasn't that much to these.

Flower Cookies

Some simple flower cookies. I made these back in March for my youngest daughter's 4th birthday.

Pastel Rainbow Cookies

My oldest daughter asked for rainbow cookies to share with her class for her birthday last year and she asked for rainbow cookies again this year. I used the rainbow cookie cutter from the Wilton 3 Piece St. Patrick's Day Cookie Cutter Set. I outlined the clouds in white and then filled them with white, flood consistency royal icing. I let these dry for a couple of hours and then piped on the rainbow with a Wilton #13 star tip. I made sure the royal icing was a stiff consistency so that the stars would keep their shape. This was actually a very easy project. Mixing the different colors and piping the stars took some time, but it wasn't that bad.

To obtain the pastel colors I used the following Americolor food gels:

  • Pink: Dusty pink with a very small amount of royal blue (I used a tiny drop added with a toothpick)
  • Orange: Orange with a very small amount of dusty pink
  • Yellow: 1/3 Lemon yellow and 2/3 Egg Yellow
  • Green: Avocado with a small amount of Leaf Green
  • Blue: Sky Blue
  • Purple: Dusty Pink, Sky Blue, and Royal Purple

I used Sweet Sugar Belle's trick that she describes here here to make the icing colors match.

Lego Ninjago Cookies

I made these cookies for a friend's son's 7th birthday party. I followed Sugarbelle's tutorial fairly closely. I used the Wilton Comfort-Grip Egg cookie cutter and trimmed off a couple of pieces from the bottom to give them this shape. Instead of piping on frosting for the eyes, I cut out my own stencil and airbrushed them on with black food dye.

When my older daughters saw me making these cookies, they got very excited. They immediately insisted that I make "the Gold Ninja." I had no idea what this was, but it wasn't hard to figure it out. It's exactly what it sounds like. A gold ninja. So I decided to give making one a try. I made on Ninjago character that looked just like the others except that it's base color was a yellowish brown. Then I airbrushed some gold sheen food dye onto the cookie. This was my first attempt at using my airbrush to evenly cover a larger surface. I wished I had made more brown Ninjago cookies to use for practice. I had only made two so I didn't have much room for experimenting, but I think it turned out well enough.

I sent one gold ninja along with all the others for the birthday boy.
